There is much power in the words and stories that we tell. This eclipse highlights where we might want to align our thoughts, emotions, and identity in a more coherent and powerful way. The Saturn Pluto conjunction looms large in its influence of this eclipse (exact on 1/12, read more here on my complete overview of that aspect), and it’s the biggest astrological event of 2020. Suffice to say, we may have thought that 2020 was going to be all about X, and now we realize that it’s much more than that, that our story and reality must expand to encompass the multi-dimensional being that we have become.
The structure of our identity in our personal and professional life is coming under scrutiny with five planets in Capricorn. Make no mistake, this energy can feel heavy; we can feel the weight of our responsibilities on our shoulders. That’s why it’s critical to pay attention to how you are currently defining your identity. Most of us have some if not a large part of our identity wrapped up in the work we do every day. That’s why when someone loses a job, for example, it can be such an emotional blow to our self-worth and self-esteem. Even when someone voluntarily takes a sabbatical or retires, there often is a period of depression or feelings of loss that follow. We don’t know who we are anymore; we’re untethered from our familiar routine and responsibilities.
To start off 2020 on the good foot, we’re due to take a look under the hood of what we are identifying with right now and have a grown-up conversation about whether or not it’s time to make some changes. Maybe you define yourself as an attentive mother at the expense of your inner artist who’s yearning to create. Or maybe you define yourself as a loyal hardworking employee at the expense of your inner entrepreneur who’s ready to be her own boss. Whatever it is, this eclipse highlights some strong opinions we hold about ourselves that just aren’t resonating on an emotional level anymore. Yet we retreat to them because they are safe and familiar and because we feel in control. That coping pattern is no longer an option, as we’ve matured to see these opinions for what they are: an overly limited perspective on our potential. The moon’s trine to Neptune helps us access our intuition and compassion in this process.
With Mercury’s strong presence in this eclipse, the story we are telling about what’s going on for us holds a lot of power. As we become aware of the changes in identity we want to make, how we talk about it with ourselves and with others matters. Is it all about working hard and being busy, or can you tell the story of allowing for the space and stillness of winter? Find ways to be the hero/ine of what’s going on without complaining about it. This will help keep us focused and energized for the path ahead.
Uranus turns direct on 1/10, giving us further momentum to make some courageous changes. Whatever might have been an inkling, idea, or start of a plan in mid-August (when Uranus first turned retrograde) is now ready for its next phase. Uranus also trines Jupiter, helping fuel our faith in ourselves and in new possibilities. There’s a significant amount of freedom in letting your identity expand beyond the tried and true options we’ve been clinging on to. Let yourself get excited about the different futures available to you now.
Questions to ponder: Where in my life am I ready to express the unlimited resource of creativity within me? In what ways is my identity expanding to include my beautiful, multi-faceted self? What overly rigid opinions about myself and/ or others, especially those in authority, am I ready to let go of? How am I telling the healing story of what’s happening in my life right now?
